Woolungosaurus, an Australian elasmosaur. The head is coloured like a fish, so as it can be sneaking in amongst the fishies to gobble them up (an idea suggested to me by palaeontologist Colin McHenry in less infantile language).

Nice work. The shadow on the sea bottom gives a good sense of depth and makes it apparent that the elasmosaur is swimming, or better, gliding through the water.

It would make sense that Woolungosaurus could have had such a disguise, since plesiosaurs’ necks are considered to be somewhat inflexible.
As well, the position of the eyes slightly atop the skull suggests that plesiosaurs may have sneaked in on their prey from below.
Looks great!

I love the camouflage patterning. The light and dark evokes the same pattern that one sees when the sea is somewhat restless which would give a great trompe de l'oiel to anything looking down from above. Great depth as someone else has already mentioned. This actually almost looks like a traditional painting. :)
Great work, as always.

Love this idea of Col's and your rendition of it... I followed similar instructions for that Science illustration a while back.

Lovely

You mind if I steal this idea for one of my own elasmosaur/plesiosaur pictures?

I just noticed something. You have super powers. That is so cool. Can you fly?
